My Writing Process Works For Me - 970 Words
The first semester of W131 has given me the chance to become more familiar with my strengths and weaknesses in my writing process. One of the main things I contribute to my progression in writing is practice and revision. W131 has given me the resources I need to become an effective writer by pushing me to think deeper about what writing process works best for me. To find what writing process works for me, I have experimented with different writing techniques along with alternative reading techniques to allow me to retain more detail. Although I improved some skills during the first half of W131, I still have many skills that could be critiqued to enhance my writing process and essays. At the start of the semester, I had trouble with providing sufficient support to back up my topic sentences. Even though I make strong theses, they begin to lose their meaning as I progress through my essays due to lack of support. For example, in my original Response Essay, The Stress of Todayââ¬â¢ s Generation, I allude to but never support the fact that crammed schedules have led to an increase in stress on todayââ¬â¢s students. After reevaluating my essay, I provided sufficient support to how a crammed schedule leads to an increase in stress. Some facts I used to support my claim included time management issues, being required to work a job, participating in extracurricular activities, and stiffer competition in todayââ¬â¢s society for a top notch job. This revision to my essay allowed me to feel thatShow MoreRelatedWriting Process : Writing And Writing862 Words à |à 4 Pages Composing Process Essay As a writer, I can adopt a system of writing that I can use most of the time. Essay about Notions of Power Animal Farm and Macbeth
ââ¬Å"Political Power grows out of the barrel of a gunâ⬠-Chairman Mao- QUESTION: To what extent does this quote connect to the message regarding power in each of your texts? Write a synthesis essay that deals with the quote above and Shakespeareââ¬â¢s Macbeth and Orwellââ¬â¢s Animal Farm. In your essay ensure that you specifically refer to each of texts including quotes and analysis. ââ¬Å"Political Power grows out of the Barrel of a Gunâ⬠The idea of power and especially political power has its many definitions, and is used, explored, and even exploited, featuring in all human experiences in the struggle for authority and dominance. The theme of power is widely explored in the two texts of Macbeth by Shakespeare, the famousâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Significantly, the motifs of blood and daggers, in Macbeth, are constantly present throughout scenes in which the struggle for power takes place. Macbeth sees an ââ¬Å"imaginaryâ⬠dagger before him just before the assassination of Duncan this dagger a motif of the changes of power that take place: ââ¬Å"â⬠¦Is this a dagger which I see before me?... or art thou a dagger of the mind?â⬠The theme of the supernatural and also the motif of the dagger being his ambition, serves as strong motivation for Macbeth to carry out what is necessary to obtain and sustain power. The rise of the Macbeths in the murders of King Duncan and Banquo are symbolised by blood and daggers, yet it is also the eventual downfall, mentally and physically, of the Macbeths that is symbolised by blood and daggers. Lady Macbethââ¬â¢s mental breakdown towards the end of Macbeth is a complete juxtaposition from the ââ¬Ëoriginalââ¬â¢ Lady Macbeth earlier in the text. After the murder of Duncan she remarks that the blood on her hands will be washed away by a ââ¬Å"â⬠¦little waterâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ , yet later she remarks in a dramatic hyperbole remarking that ââ¬Å"All the perfumes of Arabia will not sweeten this little handâ⬠. From this point on, the Macbeths hold onto power deteriorates with the death of Lady Macbeth and the eventual downfall of Macbeth. In Animal Farm, George Orwell has far blunter and clearer ideas on the notion of power, especially on the struggle to obtain and sustain political power.Show MoreRelatedIn Depth Research of Witchcraft Essay3980 Words à |à 16 Pagesof the 1600s, spreading from Europe to the New World of America. It was a miracle that my father survived because the river is too wide and the current was too strong with the heavy rains, he bumped a stable big rock where he hung on so that he wonââ¬â¢t be carried by the river flow, where he got the wounds on his knees. â⬠With a soft voice as she continue to relay what had happened that led to the death of both her mother and brother. ââ¬Å"oh! Iââ¬â¢m sorry my friend, that was so difficult for you. â⬠Cecile holds her hand to show her sympathy. ââ¬Å"how about their bodies? a question pumped out from her mind as she recall that her father lost sight of her mother when he rescued her, and the part that her brotherââ¬â¢s body went with the river flow. ââ¬Å"My brotherââ¬â¢s corpse was found on the same day, and it took three weeks for the rescuers , with my dad and relatives, to find my motherââ¬â¢s corpse. â⬠She answered. Speech How Horseback Riding Changed My Life Essay I know a girl who is 15 years old and has been riding horses for ten years. She comes from a small city where extra land is scarce. A place where horses, cows, and sheep are never seen. But on one special day, every year is a special parade. On that day every year there is almost a 100% guarantee that there will be a big cart pulled by two Belgian Drafts. She never learnt their names nor their stories, but ever since she was 2 they were her favorite part. One year when she was 5 and a half she stood in front of the dollar store like she did every year and watched two horses come over the hill. Before she could even hear the sounds of their hooves approaching she noticed something different these horses were smaller, different colors, and they had people on top of them, perched on their backs like little blue jays resting on a tree. She had never seen anything like it, it was crazy, weird, and a new source of questions that would drive her parents crazy for years to come. We will write a custom essay on Speech How Horseback Riding Changed My Life specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now As the horses got closer the numbers grew from 2 to 4 to 8! Her eyes grew wide and she started to shiver in excitement. She listened as her mother read a sign that one girl was holding ââ¬Å"MVA Summer Campsâ⬠, that little girl looked up at her mother and had only one word that came to mind ââ¬Å"pleaseâ⬠. Her and her mother walked down to a small area after the parade where people were lining up to sit on these horses. Without even second guessing herself that girl jumped in line, her mother rushing behind her to catch up. They waited for 5 minutes and when they got to the front of the line her mother talked to the lady about these summer camps as her daughter was drooling over the horses coming towards her. A big yellow horse approached and a girl was lifted off her back, a man came up behind the girl and lifted her onto that same horses back. The man told her the horses name was Whitey and he led them on, that man had no idea he was the beginning of that little girls newest, biggest, dream. Good morning Judges, Parents and fellow 4H members. My name is Riley McNeice and I am that little girl. People often ask me how I got involved with horses since I live in a town that never had them I never know how to answer that question so I usually say, ââ¬Å"it just happened. I did go to that summer camp, for 8 years! I rode horses and ponies from ages 3 to 22, horses with names that had to do with their color to names that were constellations in the sky. I learnt so much from that summer camp, how to clean a horse, how to tack a horse and how to ride. I was so lucky! I have such great relationships with people I met there and people I worked with there. Although doing the same thing for 8 years is fun, it does get boring. I had grown as a person and a rider and I felt that I had grew as much as I could there. I knew on my 8th year it was my last and it was heart breaking, but I also knew that I was moving to greener pastures. And I did, I met the beautiful Hamer/Ziegler family almost a year ago, I felt like I was welcomed with open arms. I was some random girl who showed up in rubber boots and in a huge sweater just asking for an opportunity. They never even batted an eye. I truly believe that I wouldnt be standing here doing what I am doing without them. I think I have developed as a rider and a person because of them. That summer I spent it at their farm, I helped with daily chores and rode amazing horses from the day school ended till the day before school started. I still work there and hope to be saying that for a while longer. When I think back to that question, I now see that it wasnt the horses that drew me in but it was the people that helped me realize who I am.

Strategic Choise Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Strategic Choise - Essay Example Porter's Generic Strategies model (Porter, 1985) illustrated that competitive scope is to be either, focused on the whole market, or a narrow segment of the available market. In addition, the model emphasised that only two effective marketing strategies existed: lowest product costs or high-perceived value by the customer (differentiation) (Macmillan & Tampoe, 2000). The model depicts three generic strategies: 1) cost leadership; 2) differentiation; and 3) focus on a target market. The least attractive strategy is one that takes the middle ground between two options. For example, British Airways (BA) uses a differentiation strategy (Johnson & Scholes, 1999). "The "BA Way" business strategy actively engages with employees, shareholders, customers and the community (Johnson & Scholes, 1999). During 2004-2005 BA experienced an increase of 3.3% in revenue. In contrast, Adria Airlines' Customer Relationship Management strategy focuses on quality and the personal touch, according to Porter 's model would be focusing on a target market (Adria Airways, 2004). In contrast to Porter's model Adria experienced an increase in production and administrative costs of 12% during 2003-2004 (Adria Airways, 2004). Both airlines are concerned with only a narrow segment of the airline market, yet neither benefited substantially from their strategic choice. Bowman's Strategy Clock model (Macmillan & Tampoe, 2000) is comparable to Porter's model in that he also categorised competitive strategy into cost leadership or degree of differentiation (Johnson & Scholes, 1999, Macmillan & Tampoe, 2000). However, Bowman's model extended Porter's by incorporating a "hybrid" strategy that represented an optimal balance between perceived customer value and price. This provides an organisation with three broad strategies that exist on a continuum: 1) low cost and low value as perceived by the customer (i.e., generic brands); 2) "good value" products that find balance between price and value; and 3) high cost and high perceived value items (i.e., luxury goods) (Macmillan & Tampoe, 2000). Bowman's model is much more reflective of the 21st century marketing environment, in that many organisations specialise in providing products and services that blend low cost and high differentiation (Macmillan & Tampoe, 2000). For example, British Airways could be co nsidered to be using the hybrid strategy of Bowman's, as its business strategy seeks to lower costs yet differentiate itself by way of increasing its engagement with stakeholders (British Airways, 2005). According to Porter's model, this would be a weak strategy as it combines two generic strategies (i.e., cost leadership and differentiation). Adria Airlines Customer Relationship Management strategy (Adria Airways, 2004), could be considered to be in Bowman's category of focused differentiation, due to its provision of seasonal charter services, and personal high quality services. So that the higher price of their product also has perceived added value for a select target market. This category reflects Porter's generic category of differentiated focus for a narrow competitive strat

Demand for umbrella is highest in a rainy season. However, the umbrella is becoming an all-whether necessity with changing lifestyle and fashion needs. University students are reported to take Umbrellas in a big way (Scaria 2015). There is a market for about 96 lakh pieces of umbrella that is not adequately met (Krishnakumar 2015). U2Go will mostly be competing with all umbrella sellers on campus, which range from the UBC bookstore, Sear shop, Shoppers, University Pharmacy, London Drugs shop, and the Umbrella Shop at Granville Island. However, as this service is new, there will not be any direct competition facing our organization, establishing a monopoly advantage. Those shops are located in fixed places and have single outlets. Our salespeople will be quite mobile and distributed in major streets where students are likely to pass through especially in the rainy or weather. Therefore, we will reach out to our customer and they will not look for us like the other shops (Vancouver Umbrella). The business will open 6.00 am in the morning and close 7.00 pm to cater for hours that students get in and leave school. However, the business will open overtime in rainy seasons when it is expected sales will be high when our competitors have closed. The price of an umbrella depends on the quality and durability. We are determined to provide all varieties to meet our customerââ¬â¢s interests. The average cost of an umbrella in Vancouver and particularly around UBC campus is $ 10-50.Ã

History of air conditioning - Research Paper Example He did this while working at Apalachicola in Florida. This first attempt ,done in 1830s involved a device that brought a cooling effect by blowing air over a bucket of ice. This aimed at solving the problem experienced by yellow fever and malaria patients. The article then moves to show the construction of a structure like a box carrying cloths that contained melted ice water saturated. Naval engineers constructed the structure and it had a fan blowing overhead hot air. This article is very important as it gives a sequential development from an idea slowly but sure. It mentions that, Willis Carrier an American engineer made an air conditioner that closely resembled the air conditioner units of the present time. In my final research, I will use this article in tracking the outline of the development of air conditioners. I will use this resource because of its precision in giving the dates and those who patented the technology at various stages. Biddle, Jeff E. "Making Consumers Comfor table: The Early Decades Of Air Conditioning In The United States." Journal of Economic History 71.4 (2011): 1078-1094. EconLit. Web. 20 Mar. 2012. Biddleââ¬â¢s article gives historical overview of air conditioning. ... This article is important in this research because it shows the various customers of the air conditioning over historical time starting from movie theatres in 1920s and 1930s. it also shows a marked increase in use of air conditioning in 1950s with the new hotels construction in America. According to Biddle, 60 percent of motels and hotels in the nation used air conditioning by 1960s. I will use this article in my final research to discuss the history of air conditioning in America. The article will be important in giving details of the various uses of air conditioning in Americaââ¬â¢s history. Cooper, Gail . Air-Conditioning America: Engineers and the Controlled Environment, 1900-1960. Baltimore: JHU Press ,2002. Print. Coopers book gives a history of the air conditioning tracing from the papers of Willis Carrier at New York, Ithaca, and Cornell University, the records of Carrier Corporation at Connecticut, East Hartford and United Technologies. The book considers the records of the Carrier Corporation very rich in detailing the work of the engineers involved in the development of air conditioners. Although, this book by Cooper does not give the history of air conditioning itself, it points to relevant materials that show historical development of air conditioning. Thus by pointing the sources, it is useful in giving guidance to the research. The book points Margaret Ingelsââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"professional biography,â⬠as the most helpful book giving the history of air conditioning. The Features And Translation Of English Slang
The Features And Translation Of English Slang Slang is the use of informal words and expressions that does not belong to the standard English, but it is acceptable in certain social settings. In our daily life, we can see the use of slang in the books, magazines and movies on TV, because slang is related closely to the national culture. The translation of English slang is required the translator to pay attention to the appropriateness of the language and the background culture. Key words: English slang, daily life, translation, appropriateness, culture Language is the tool for human beings to communicate with each other, it has no class nature. But it doesnt mean that people use the same language in different class. The languages used in different class have their distinct characters and color; they can reflect the speakers social background, status, artistic culture and industry background. In English, slang is a colorful word. But now, people can use slang in the conversation to make their language to be vivid, humorous and different from others. Especially, the youth keep trying to make new slangs in their conversations. Meanwhile, slang can help the conversation to be easy and friendly. So slang is used widely in our daily life, for instance in the books, magazines and movies. As a widely used language, slang has its own definition, features and ways of translation. In a broad sense, idioms may include colloquialisms, catchphrases, slang expressions, proverbs, etc. In the Oxford Advanced Learners English-Chinese Dictionary, slang is very informal words and expressions that are more common in spoken language, especially used by a particular group of people, for example, children, criminals, soldiers, etc. In English, there are Standard Usage, Colloquialism and Jargon. Standard Usage is used by most people in every situation; Colloquialism is used in informal situation, especially in informal conversations. Jargon is the different language used in different professions, ages, etc. Slang seems to be between Colloquialism and Jargon, it is not only the commonly used language among the most people, but also belongs to a social group. Slang is a conversational word with some color which is understood by most people. Slang has many features by what we can use and understand it easily. Firstly, slang is convenient and concise. Generally speaking, slang is easy, short and attractive; to the contrary, Standard Usage is like stiff and tedious. Most slangs are created by the public in the daily life, so its more convenient, expressive and vivid than Standard Usage. For example, if you want to evaluate some food, you will use delicious to praise and terrible to complain in Standard Usage. Delicious and terrible are polysyllable, their pronunciations are longer. On the contrary, you can use two symmetric and easy words to express, yummy and yukky. There is another example. Beer party can be expressed to kegger in slang which is very visual and vivid; both hop and dance mean dance, but people make a connection between hop and grasshopper crowhops happily in the grass. Secondly, slang is very humorous. As we all know, the American are humorous and imaginative, so most slang is expressed the Americans wisd om and humor. The Pentagon is called Target A in the slang, which satirize that America plays Pacific police in the world to interpose the other countries domestic affairs. In Chinese, we use à ¦Ã ¸Ã ¸Ã ¦Ã ³Ã ³Ã ¥Ã
âÃâ to describe someones waistline is exceed standard, and the American use lovehandles to describe it. Thirdly, slang is informal. For example, people always use telly to express television, some think telly is too formal so that they use goggle-box or the one-eye monster instead. When something is wrong with the television, it can be expressed to Its on the blink. Fourthly, slang is neoteric unstable and fast updated. The idea what is thought of suddenly can be expressed to brain storm; firemen is called smoke eater; airplane is called flying coffin; people who waste the time is called clock watcher. All these imaginative words are fresh so they are popular. In the modern society, students, servants and fans like to use slang in their daily life, meanwhile, they are not satisfied with the slang, so they always make new slang in their conversation. As time goes by, the new slang will make the old to lose their freshness and it will be replaced. Slang can be divided into two parts by the life, one is a flash in the pan, for instance, skidoo, peach, skirt, etc. and the other one can spread widely to become the Standard Usage, for example, baby-sitter, fire, boss, fan, yes-man, cop, etc. Finally, slang has synonymity. Slang has many vocabularies to describe the same thing, because every class will provide the new words for slang and it wont be stopped by too many words which are the same meaning. Slangs synonymity is expressed on die, drink, money and body etc. For example, die can be expressed to to kick the bucket, to turn it in, to turn ones toes up, to turn ones heels, to be agoner, to go up the flame; slightly drunk can be called fresh, lush, squiffy, tight; very drunk can be expressed to soaked, sozzeld, stoned; confused with drink can be called blitzed, fuddled, woozy. Besides, money can be expressed to brass, lolly, tin, dash, bees, dough, bread, honey. In a word, slangs expressional color and extent are enriched by the plenty of synonyms. When we understand the features of slang, we can translate and use slang better in our English study and daily conversation. Incontestably, there are some ways to translate slang. Firstly, transliteration is the fundamental way of translating slang. When there is no word to translate slang, we can translate slang based on its pronunciation. For example, salon, hacker, cool, Hippies and Yuppies can be translated into à ¦Ã ²Ã¢â ¢Ã ©Ã ¾Ã¢â ¢Ã £Ã¢â ¬Ã à ©Ã »Ã¢â¬Ëà ¥Ã ®Ã ¢Ã £Ã¢â ¬Ã à ©Ã¢â¬ ¦Ã ·Ã £Ã¢â ¬Ã à ¥Ã ¬Ã¢â¬ °Ã §Ã
¡Ã ®Ã ¥Ã £Ã «Ã ¥Ã¢â¬â¢Ã
âà ©Ã¢â¬ ºÃ¢â¬ ¦Ã §Ã
¡Ã ®Ã ¥Ã £Ã «. But not all slang can be translated by transliteration, if we can find the proper way to translate, we should avoid using transliteration. Secondly, literal translation is the common way to translate slang. It can keep the content and form of the text; meanwhile, it can help us to understand the western culture. But literal translation is difficult, because w e shouldnt make the readers confused in our translation. For example, Mark is an old hand in fixing cars. can be translated into à ©Ã ©Ã ¬Ã ¥Ã¢â¬ ¦Ã¢â¬ ¹Ã ¥Ã
âà ¨Ã ¤Ã ¿Ã ®Ã §Ã â⬠à ¦Ã ±Ã ½Ã ¨Ã ½Ã ¦Ã ¦-à ¹Ã ©Ã à ¢Ã ¦ÃÅ"à ¯Ã ¤Ã ¸Ã¢â ¬Ã ¤Ã ¸Ã ªÃ ¨Ã¢â ¬Ã à ¦Ã¢â¬ °Ã¢â¬ ¹Ã ¤Ã ºÃ¢â¬ à £Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â¬Å¡ an old hand is a slang; it can be literally translated into à ¨Ã¢â ¬Ã à ¦Ã¢â¬ °Ã¢â¬ ¹ which means be good at. Literal translation can make the English sentence to be humorous and enrich the Chinese vocabulary. Thirdly, free translation is more common and flexible than literal translation; it keeps the content of the text except the form. For example, Dont pull my leg. may be translated into à ¤Ã ¸Ã à ¨Ã ¦Ã à ¦Ã¢â¬ ¹Ã¢â¬ °Ã ¦Ãâ ââ¬Ëà §Ã
¡Ã¢â¬Å¾Ã ¨Ã¢â¬ ¦Ã ¿, but it should be translated into à ¥Ãâ à «Ã §Ã »Ã¢â ¢Ã ¦Ãâ ââ¬Ëà ¥Ã ¼Ã¢â ¬Ã §Ã
½Ã ©Ã §Ã ¬Ã¢â¬Ë. We must use free translation to in stead of literal translation here, because we must pay attention on the meaning of the sentence instead of the form. Finally, replacement is the important way to solve the problem to translating English slang into Chinese. Different countries have different cultures and ways of thinking. We can replace the image to avoid missing the special meaning. For example, cat is the pet of the Europe and it means woman in their culture. So models walk is called catwalk. In a word, when we meet cat in English sentences, we should translate it into human first. She called me a copy cat just because my shoes look like hers. a copy cat can be translated into à §Ã
ââ⬠¹Ã ¦Ã à ·Ã ¥Ã à ¦Ã ¦Ã à ·Ã §Ã
¡Ã¢â¬Å¾Ã ¤Ã ºÃ º. Actually, there are many ways to translate slang into Chinese. We should keep learning their culture and languages so that we can translate slang better. Generally speaking, the argument of slang is still existed. Some argue that learning slang will destroy English, we should make it normative. Some support that slang is vivid and humorous so we should learn it. In my opinion, slang is an interesting part of the English learning. If we learn English, we should learn the culture, language and life. Meanwhile, we can learn slang better by learning the features and ways of translation of slang. Work cited: à ¥Ã ¼Ã à ¤Ã ¼Ã

Midlife Crisis Bob just turned forty. He has trouble relating to his kids, and wonders if his life has any meaning anymore. His wife of twenty years has just divorced him, and he canââ¬â¢t seem to fight the bouts of depression that attack him, especially at night. There is a common name for this widespread problem. Bob is having a mid-life crisis. As we learned at the beginning of our course, the most common view among psychologists currently is the life-span development perspective. This is why I decided to work with a topic that would most likely not have been studied 40 years ago. What exactly causes this problem, how it affects the relationships a person has with others, and whether it only affects men are all issues to be discussed from a look at some articles in several accredited psychology magazines. Ethics in Criminal Justice Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words
Ethics in Criminal Justice - Essay Example The prohibition of such punishments was influenced by the need to make punishments more rational and ââ¬Å"less painfulâ⬠. In a case involving the United States and Weems in 1910, a US court ruled that sentencing the convict to 20 years chained imprisonment for giving false testimony amounted to a cruel and unusual punishment. Lionel Tate was accused and initially sentenced for killing Tiffany Eunick in cold blood, callously and indiscriminately an in a cruel manner. The court in its decision sentenced Tate to life imprisonment after considering the evidences presented before it. Even though the defendant later appealed on several bases and was finally set free, the juvenile could be charged for aggravated child abuse, felony murder, premeditated murder, and for giving false testimony (Findlaw.com, 2003). Tate testified to the effect that he accidentally picked Tiffany and knocked her on the table although it is clear that the injuries that the latter sustained were graver than those which could be inflicted through such an action. The defense to these charges would be to claim that Tate did not understand the consequences of his actions due to mental incompetence. Tate being subjected to life imprisonment was a clear act of cruel and unusual punishment given that he was a juvenile and was supposed to be dealt with as such.
